JBG & Sears Uplift Local Veteran Homeowner and His Wife
[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]On June 12th, volunteers from Rebuilding Together Montgomery County, JBG and the Sears Heroes at Home program completed home renovations for U.S. Army veteran Charles Sherman and his wife, Anne Colbert. Mr. Sherman and his wife have lived in their Gaithersburg, Maryland home for the past 15 years. After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, Mr. Sherman had to be moved into a long-term care facility. Ms. Sherman now bears the brunt of the responsibilities in the home and has been unable to make the much-needed repairs to the home.
Prior to the team’s home repair project, the Sherman family had been living without several working appliances (including a functioning stove, oven and dryer), navigating down broken and dangerous stairs, and functioning with inoperable electrical outlets in 50% of their home.
Working side by side, volunteers painted the entire exterior of the house and reframed a new front and back staircase so that family members could enter and exit the home safely. Thanks to the generous investments made by both JBG and Sears, RTMC was able to make extensive electrical repairs throughout the home. RTMC was also able to purchase and new appliances for the Sherman family. These home repairs not only improved the home but improved the quality of life for the Sherman family.
Ms. Colbert was overwhelmed by the volunteer’s generosity and deeply touched by the reality that complete strangers cared about her and her family’s living conditions. “I can pick up a broom and clean my home, but fixing these long-overdue repairs is something else entirely. I mean, your team is providing me and my husband with something that we simply could not provide ourselves. This is huge for us. I feel good, and blessed and humbled by what you’re doing for me and other people in our community. Thank you, thank you, thank you,” said Ms. Colbert to the volunteers as they completed a long day’s work on her home.
Rebuilding Together joins the Sherman family by thanking the JBG Companies and the Sears Heroes at Home program for their engagement as we repair homes, renew hope and revitalize neighborhoods across Montgomery County.
