Over the course of several weeks, more than 25 RBC employees invested their time, talent, and skills, under the supervision of House Captain Scott Deffinbaugh to improve the home and quality of life for Toni and her entire family.
Week after week, these volunteers hammered, scrubbed, painted and planted away until Ms. Oland’s home looked as if it truly had gone through an “extreme home makeover”. Inside of the home, Ms. Oland’s basement underwent a thorough mold remediation process, a deep cleaning process, and a complete renovation. Outside, volunteers removed dangerous debris, worked on her gutters and roof, and landscaped her front yard.
All in, the value of the work completed exceeded $20,0000.00! It was because of RBC’s successful internal fundraising campaign and leveraging of all contributions through volunteer engagement that made this extreme home makeover possible.
We’d like to send a special thank you to the RBC team for their commitment and continued support of our local communities through RTMC’s National Rebuilding Day effort.
Below is a note from Toni Oland and her family to RTMC and the RBC Wealth Management volunteers who worked on their home.
“Tom, Emma, the RTMC team and all the great people who volunteered on my home renovation project- thank you. We can never thank you enough for the life-changing gift you provided me and my family.
You not only rebuilt our home, but you set us on a path of rebuilding and reshaping our lives! You have truly been a blessing and for that, we are forever grateful.”
-Toni, Taylor, Emily and Hunter Oland
Volunteering leverages RTMC’s ability to support our neighbors in need and provides a valuable experience for all involved. Check out the benefits of volunteering with RTMC today!
Learn by Doing- Need to install drywall in your kitchen or replace tile in the bathroom? You can hire a contractor, pay to take a course, or you can learn these skills on a team of volunteers with Rebuilding Together Montgomery County. With RTMC, you can help a family repair their own home while learning about framing, masonry, siding, roofing and more!
Shape Up- An exercise class can run up to $20 a session, and a personal trainer, much more. But volunteering in a physically active way can improve the health of your body, your bank account and your karma. While working with RTMC, you’ll burn calories without burning your bucks!
Get Social- A strong social network has been linked to healthier, longer and happier lives. Build yours up through volunteer service with RTMC – a time-honored way of meeting new people and making new friends. Just ask our long-time volunteer Ron Sarro who met his wife on a Rebuilding Together project 6 years ago!
Expand and Explore Career Options- If you’re looking to get back into the workforce or are interested in changing careers, volunteer work can help you build your resume, personal connections and specific skills. Volunteering can be a particularly great way to get hands-on experience with decision makers from across all sectors.
Feel Good about Yourself and Your Community- Ghandi said that the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. Well we certainly believe that at RTMC and we have thousands of volunteers who do too! While we’re not sure, we’re convinced that by lifting others, they too rise.

They repaired her home, restored hope and revitalized her faith in the neighbor helping neighbor approach we all hold so dear.

The 2015 National Rebuilding Day event will commemorate 25 strong years of providing free, safe and healthy home repairs to our county’s most vulnerable residents.
This year, more than ever, we are hoping to generate buzz around NRD and spread the word about our supporters’ service to our homeowners in need. In response to our volunteer’s feedback and requests, we’re also supporting a grassroots fundraising effort called “$25 for 25” in commemoration of our 25th anniversary.
For the first time in our history, RTMC will work hand-in-hand with our volunteers to fundraise – promoting their personalized team fundraising pages on the trusted site www.gofundme.com. Through their pages, each of our 21 NRD project teams will be able connect their network of co-workers, friends and family to their individual projects! On each page, supporters will find the team’s homeowner story, a special message from the team’s volunteer leaders, and a simple $25 for 25 donation request. Each team has a $1,000.00 fundraising goal and RTMC has a larger goal of $10,000.00 for the entire $25 for 25 campaign.
Funds raised will support RTMC’s ability to further its mission and support homeowners in need.
We know all too well the power in neighbors-helping-neighbors and the power of a community movement. Let’s work together this NRD to grow our movement by the thousands!
