Women transforming Montgomery County
In partnership with Women Building Washington Group of ABC Metro Washington Chapter, Rebuilding Together Montgomery County hosted a She Builds event on March 9, 2018. This sister to sister event supported low-income female homeowners by creating safer and healthier homes, and gave female builders a meaningful, hands-on opportunity for service. The event took place a day after International Women’s Day and was strategically planned around 2018 Women in Construction Week.
In our second year hosting this event, we saw tremendous growth. In 2017, our first year holding the event, we had nearly 25 volunteers work on the home of one Montgomery County homeowner. To support the event, these volunteers raised over $5,000. For 2018 She Builds, we had nearly 100 volunteers working on three different project sites. Volunteers worked on the homes of two female-led households in Damascus and Rockville, in addition to working on a women’s shelter in Silver Spring. This group of dedicated volunteers raised over $21,000 through a peer to peer campaign with the support of over 200 family, friends, colleagues, and businesses. Funds raised for She Builds not only supported the three projects that were part of the event, but will go towards supporting safe and healthy home repairs in many other households throughout Montgomery County.
